DF CVG Flooring-Paneling combination allows 3-4  sand and finishes. Sanding typically removes 1/32", and is necessary mostly because the imperceptible thickness variations need to be sanded flush.

Notice that the only part of the edge touching are the wear layers. The groove is slightly deeper than the tongue and the slightly beveled edge paneling back allows for the natural seasonal expansion and contration of your floor. If it were "center matched" as with paneling, you would possibly see face gaps. The wear layer is pressured together from nailing or taping so the wear layer fibers expande and contract as the flooring tongue and backside are allowed to move freely.

We need people to step up to the reality that we are wasting our timber supply on outdated end products. For instance, architectural specifications are often inflexible and outdated. 3/4" flooring products were often installed directly onto floor joists, so the thickness was considered to be structural. Not so today.

Engineered flooring with a 1/16'' wear layer glued to a 5/8" cheaper wood platform is unnecessary and cannot resanded and finished. With modern equipment, the subfloor is identical to the platform. Its about the marketing, but 's not right. Prefinished engineered flooring is typically finished with an aluminum oxide that requires a grinder to remove. No possible to refinishe most engineered which is why the wear layer is paper thin.
